Serendah and Ulu Yam…
Monday, March 12th, 2007Since it is VMY 2007, me and friends decided to take a drive and visit a local tourist destination, aka Serendah. A small sleepy town about 5 minutes drive north of Rawang. We had like three locations within Serendah to go to, read on to find out about them.
The Sunday journey started with breakfast at Village Park Restaurant, some nasi lemak, half boiled eggs, toast bread and coffee is a sure good thing to get yourself started. After the filling meal, we left at 9.00AM and headed towards PLUS going north and on the look out for the Rawang exit. first destination = Serendah Waterfall.
How to get to Serendah Waterfall: Exit the PLUS Rawang interchange, turn right after the toll gate, pass busy Rawang town and keep on going following the signboard "Serendah". After about 5 minutes drive from Rawang town, you will pass the Serendah Police Station on your right and then look out for the first traffic light. Turn right at the light and follow the kampung road in. Follow this map, courtesy of Sekeping Serendah.
Be careful when heading towards the end of the road closer to the waterfall, the BRIDGE has collapsed and you will need to make a slight detour on the left side of the road to get up to the waterfall.
At the waterfall, you have the choice of using the lowest fall nearest to the car park or venture up the granite strewn road for a higher fall. We decided to take the challenge and did the hike uphill for about 10 minutes. Do NOT take any detour going up BUT do keep looking over the right road shoulder to see where you are. Going up, you will see a left turn fork (ignore this), a concrete house on stilts (over the right road shoulder) and then only comes the target fall. To get down to the fall, there is a very small path (animal path) that you need to climb down.

When we were done with the waterfall, we drove back down the kampung road (return journey) and took a right turn towards Sekeping Serendah. The little turn may not look like a turning you will want to drive you car thru but what the heck. Keep a lookout for a small pond on the right and the right turn is before it. About 100 meters in, you will end up at a dead end with a metal gate and brick walls. Welcome to Sekeping Serendah. Nice place to stay over and enjoy the peace and quiet of the forest.

OK, last item on the itinerary for Serendah is the International Orchid Park. Upon exiting the Orang Asli kampungs and returning back to the main road traffic light, we took a right turn and drove on for about 5 minutes. Keep a lookout for a Purple coloured signboard (hung high up and a pole) on the right hand side of the road that read SIOP. The Orchid Park is located high on top of the hill on the right and you will need to drive all the way up to the top. If you love flowers, then it is worth going to.

At SIOP, we by chance met up with 2 friendly uncles that told us of an Orchid Farm at Kampung Kamin that sells beautiful potted blooms. Directions were given and we took to the road again. Back to the main road, we turn right towards Batang Kali. Further down the road, we will turn right towards Hulu Yam Bahru and Genting Highland. Moving on from there and ignoring the Genting Highland turn off (on the left), there will be a sharp turn and immediately after that turn, you will see Kampung Kamin. Take the first turn into Kampung Kamin and after that the second left turn and follow the road on until you see an Orchid Farm on your left. A must see for Orchid lovers.

And before we end the day’s journey, we had to have a stop at Ulu Yam Lama for its famous Lam Mee and Fish Cake. Yummy yummy…
